Zeolites
are a very wide range of materials of both natural and synthetic origin. The
terms molecular sieves, base exchangers and aluminosilicates are relevant in
describing differing functions of the various sections of this wide range of
products. Some have a crystalline form with small pore structure.
The major uses are now of considerable commercial importance with the replacing
of phosphates in detergent powders being a very significant application for
powdered materials.
Special granular grades are available from Universal for use in water treatment
applications. These do not contribute to the organic content of potable waters.
These are more open structured and are non crystalline or amorphous.
Applications are:
Removal of hardness - calcium and magnesium ions from water by base exchange.
Removal of heavy metal ions in solution or suspension for waters and waste
solutions.
Neutralisation of acid waters with simultaneous precipitation and floccillation
of contaminate and sedimentary material.
